# How marketing consent works

Description: Who gets marketing email in Rezzy, how consent is recorded, and why text-message consent only ever comes from the client.

Marketing in Rezzy runs on a consented list, and the rules are strict on purpose: a list built on real yeses gets opened and clicked, not marked as spam.

## Email consent

A client's profile has one switch: **"Has agreed to receive marketing emails."** It's on the record because the client actually said yes: at the desk, on the phone, on your old system's opt-in.

- Flip it on their profile when they tell you.
- [Imports](/guides/import-your-client-list) can carry it over, but only from a real consent column in your export; the default is everyone arrives unconsented.
- New clients you add by hand start unconsented; there's no consent checkbox on the new-client form, so a yes is always recorded deliberately, not by habit.

## Text-message consent is stricter

For texts, the law (TCPA) requires the client's own written opt-in, so **only the client can grant it**: by ticking "Text me about appointments and openings" on your booking form, or by confirming through the **Ask about text updates** email you can send from their page. You asking is fine; you answering for them is impossible by design.

## What consent gates, and what it doesn't

- **Gated**: [autopilot](/guides/put-your-emails-on-autopilot), [campaigns](/guides/send-a-campaign), all marketing.
- **Never gated**: booking confirmations, reminders, cancellation notices, payment links. Those are service emails about the client's own appointment; they always send.
- **In between**: the [review ask](/guides/ask-for-google-reviews-automatically) is feedback about the client's own visit, so it sends without marketing consent, but an unsubscribed client never gets one.

## Opting out

Every marketing email carries an unsubscribe link, honored instantly, no login needed, and it never expires. An unsubscribed client keeps booking and keeps getting service emails; they've only left the marketing list.

## Watching the list grow

Reports shows how many clients sit in your book without marketing consent, which is your prompt to keep asking. It's slow, honest work, and it's what the whole [rebooking engine](/guides/rebook-lapsed-clients) runs on.
